Beginner Rug Hooking: Maine Balsam Pine Cone Pillow
with Beth Miller
New! Beginners new to the craft will learn basic techniques, while completing a scented 6” x 8” balsam-design pillow with fresh balsam pine insert. Patterns will be hand drawn, ready to hook on high quality primitive linen with serged edges. Learn: a short history of hooking; how to select materials; and prepare wool strips on the cutter; finishing techniques for your piece, including serging, steaming, and binding; and if time, how to draw a pattern on the grain. Student will purchase materials at class, and be allowed to borrow a rug hooking frame for the duration of the class. Bring small embroidery scissors and small container or bag to hold “snips” trimmed while hooking. Beth owns Parris House Wool Works in Paris, ME. She teaches workshops there, at Sabbath Day Lake Shaker Village, Portfiber in Portland, Squam Art Workshops in NH, the Stitchery in RI, and more. Her company was chosen as a wildcard finalist in the 2014 Martha Stewart American Made Awards and she makes an exclusive line of hooked pillows for Beekman 1802 in NY.
