Accuplacer Prep: Math for College

All students entering college in Maine must take a Math placement test. The Maine Community Colleges and the University of Maine use the ACCUPLACER as a determinant for College Level Algebra readiness. Our class will help you get the skills you need to (a) score high enough on the ACCUPLACER exam to enter a college-level class and (b) succeed in College Algebra (MAT-140).
Dates: Feb 8 to May 2, 2016 (no class 2/15 and 4/18 schoool holidays)

Accuplacer Prep: Reading, Grammar & Writing

Students planning to enter SMCC must successfully pass the Sentence Skills and Reading Comprehension Accuplacer tests prior to admission. This class will focus on improving your performance on those tests through reading strategies and grammar related to advanced sentence structure. In addition, we will help you with writing skills so that you may be able to craft well-developed essays suitable to college level. You should come to class with adequate computer skills.

College Credit Course: College Success Seminar

Explore the college learning process, discover your individual learning style, practice test-taking skills, time management and study skills! This is a college level course equivalent to ACSS 104 at SMCC. Attendance and completion of the class with a grade of 80% or higher will earn you 3 CREDITS at as a matriculated student.

A successful college experience means that you MUST have the computer skills necessary to be able to work independently. As many adult students can be intimidated by the college experience it is essential to have those computer skills PRIOR to taking your initial college class either in person or online! The course will cover all MS Office Applications and follow the syllabus of SMCC Computers Applications course #CMPT101. Please bring a USB flash drive to class. Attendance and completion of the course will award (3) credits at SMCC to matriculated academic students.

This year we are also combining classes for South Portland and Scarborough students at our location for the classes listed on page 15. Offerings will vary by site, but the participants in our College Transitions program may enroll for classes at Adult Education at any of these following sites:

If you are an adult with a high school credential we can help you achieve that goal. Our College Transitions Coordinator can support you to develop a plan to prepare you for the Community College or University system. The college transitions program includes:
• Classes in computer, skills, reading & writing and Mathematics to improve essential academic skills
• Skills assessment and testing
• Academic, Career and Financial aid advising
In order to be eligible for this program you must have a high school diploma or equivalent and enroll in any of our classes listed on page 15.
